Auricular Acupuncture

The ear is one of the most neurologically rich structures in the body. It connects directly to the autonomic nervous system through the vagus nerve, governing your stress response, your sleep, your pain threshold and your capacity to heal.

Auricular Acupuncture is a highly targeted clinical intervention that works by stimulating precise points on the outer ear. It is used widely within NHS settings as well as GP clinics and integrative practices, and has an evidence base for use as an effective treatment in chronic pain, musculoskeletal conditions, anxiety, depression and insomnia.

This is a specialism, not a simplified version of full-body acupuncture, and requires precise anatomical knowledge, clinical judgement, and an understanding of how the ear maps to the whole system. Registered with the CNHC, it meets the same standards of professional accountability as any regulated healthcare practice.

Who Is Auricular Acupuncture For?

Auricular acupuncture is particularly well suited to those living with conditions that haven't fully resolved through conventional treatment alone. The people I see most commonly present with chronic or musculoskeletal pain that persists despite other interventions, anxiety and depression that feels embedded rather than situational, insomnia and disrupted sleep that medication manages but doesn't resolve, and stress responses that have become the body's default state rather than a temporary reaction.

What these presentations share is a nervous system that has been running in a state of dysregulation. Auricular acupuncture addresses that dysregulation directly, at a physiological level, creating the internal conditions in which deeper recovery becomes possible.

What Makes My Approach Different?

Most treatments address what the nervous system is producing, whereas auricular acupuncture works with the nervous system itself. By stimulating precise points on the outer ear mapped to specific neurological and physiological pathways, the treatment communicates directly with the autonomic nervous system through the vagus nerve.

This is not a generalised relaxation response, it is targeted neuromodulation and the difference in precision is clinically significant. This shifts the body out of a chronic stress state and into the parasympathetic conditions in which it is able to rest, regulate, and repair.

What To Expect During A Treatment

Every session begins with a consultation to understand what your system is presenting with that day. Auricular acupuncture is responsive,  and the duration of treatments are determined by what your body needs in that moment, not by a fixed protocol.

I may use fine standard needles, semi-permanent press needles and ear seeds that continue working between sessions, or electro-auricular stimulation for deeper nervous system engagement. In many cases, auricular acupuncture forms the opening phase of a longer integrated session, creating the physiological foundation from which hypnotherapy or bioenergetic work can then proceed. Most clients notice an immediate shift within the first session, as the nervous system begins to remember what regulation feels like.

What Results Can You Expect?

Because auricular acupuncture works at a systemic level, the results tend to be broader than the presenting symptom alone. Clients commonly report a reduction in pain intensity and frequency, improved sleep quality, a noticeable decrease in anxiety, and a general sense of calm. This varies from person to person, and results are cumulative, therefore a course of treatment will always achieve more than a single session.
